90 Pages of Cool "C" & "K" & Great "G" Articulation (CV to Sentence Level)

Happy Monday Everyone!  Well, here it is... the much anticipated "g" and "k" printable!  I have been asked by several people to make it and I know it will be popular because I myself needed some new and different /g/ and /k/ materials!  I especially wanted some fun new games.  I think that the SLAP CAR JACK CARD GAME and the G & K ROADWAY GAME will both be fun to do!  I've also included cute BUBBLE GUM MACHINE & CHOCOLATE BAR FILE FOLDER ACTIVITIES for /g/ and /c/ & /k/ words.  I hope that the kiddos have so much fun playing with the candy and cars that they don't even realize that they are working on their /g/ and /k/ sounds right away! We work on these two sounds all of the time with the three year olds and older kiddos at our speech clinic.  These games and activities are age appropriate!
I tried to be as helpful as possible by including a description page on how to produce these two sounds and three pages on ways to elicit them with different cueing techniques. That is followed by many, many, pages of sound plus vowel, word, phrase and sentence level games, worksheets and activities!  At the end are 12 pages of /g/ and /k/ phrase and sentence level recording sheets.  The recording sheets include the sounds in the initial, medial and final positions of the /g/ and /k/ words and I hope that they will be nice tracking sheets for your students productions when they leave the word level.
I would love to give a couple of these packs away.  The first two people to comment on our blog about this packet will receive one!   So be quick. :)Best wishes and happy January everyone.  Thanks for reading this post!!! Manda, SLP

Verbal Apraxia Exercises Targeting the Production of Primary Level Concepts

Hello Twin Sisters Speech & Language Therapy Followers! I hope that you are keeping warm during this cold winter!  Lately, I've been thinking about our Arctic friends, the penguins. They are so cute! I used some cute penguin clip art from My Cute Graphics and Scrappin Doodles and developed this last much needed document. It is mainly a unit to help out my primary grade students who are having a tough time verbally producing their own personal information and with knowing and saying things like the seasons, months, and the days of the week. Knowing and saying these type of things are often tough for primary students and especially for my speech and language delayed students. Daily review is needed to help them to remember the information. Practicing the information and giving it back in a slow and careful manner helps to improve the overall production accuracy for my students with apraxia too. That is why I have included repetition sheets that start at the 2 word level and expand to the 5 word sentence level. Repetition of words is the hallmark treatment strategy for people with verbal apraxia and this packet will now be my, "GO TO PACKET" for working with children who are demonstrating difficulty with word to sentence level repetition errors.

What is Developmental Apraxia/ Childhood Apraxia of Speech?
Apraxia is a neurological speech disorder in which a person has trouble saying what he or she wants to say correctly and consistently. It is not due to weakness or paralysis of the speech muscles (the muscles of the face, tongue, and lips), it is contributed to the brain that has problems planning to move the body parts like the lips, jaw, and tongue that are needed for speech production. It is also known as apraxia or apraxia of speech. It is important to note that the child KNOWS what he or she wants to say, but his/her brain has DIFFICULTY COORDINATING the muscle movements necessary to say words. They can have problems saying sounds, syllables, and words.

This treatment packet is targeted at helping the primary level student progress in their ability to clearly and slowly verbally produce words and sentences. We have included a variety of concepts to make the treatment program functional and age appropriate for children at the kindergarten and higher level. The students will be encouraged to read and learn the speech production cueing techniques and to use a pacing board during their repetitions. Repetition is the cornerstone of apraxia therapy. Repeating helps the brain to make new motor pathways of understanding.
Exercises in this packet range from the encouragement of the verbal production of single letters, numbers, and colors, to the encouragement of the clear and accurate production of the months, days of the week, multi-syllable words, and 3 to 6 word sentences. A variety of writing, sorting, and reading tasks are also provided to help with increasing the understanding of the concepts. We believe that understanding increases when all modalities of learning are used.
We hope you find this penguin themed unit to be both useful and fun!

THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING STRONG AUDITORY COMPREHENSION SKILLS

Children are asked to follow directions from an early age.  We start by giving them one-step directions often during the day when they are under the age of two .  For example, we ask them to, “stand up so we can help them put on their pants”, to “take their cup so they can have a drink”, and “to put their toys in the box” to help with clean up. Even when they play, children are constantly in the need of the ability to follow directions, e.g., “throw the ball”, “move your train”, “go down the slide now”.  The ability to follow directions is helpful for increased understanding of day -  to - day information that is given from caregiver to child.

As children grow older and become emerged into the preschool and grade school environments, the need for strong auditory comprehension skills become even more evident. It is in the school environment where they are constantly given the demands of needing to follow multi-step directions such as those at the two and three-step levels. Almost every day in school the children are asked to do more than one task at a time. For instance, they may be asked to put a finished art project in their desks after they are done signing their name on the project, and to go find their paper and coloring supplies in order to start their next project.  They are also given instructions like, “ Go to your lockers, put on your boots and coats, and than line up for recess”.

Children must listen to each step, process each step, and than act accordingly.  If they fail to hear or to understand a step they will be unable to follow through on the instructions given.  This inability to respond to the directions given will make the child look like one whom is unable and/or unwilling to  listen well to the teacher.  The child will not be able to keep pace with the rest of the children in their classroom and will appear to be one step behind the group.

Strong auditory comprehension / direction following skills =  a more successful student!

Sincerely,

Manda & Shanda, SLP's
